Elros here - I'm busy, but leave a message and I'll get back to you. If I don't, the dragon probably ate me or my ship sank. Oops. Please don't tell Elrond.
You never explained the differences you felt after you chose to be human, you know.
❰ aka, you have not called her ONCE after she left and she misses you but didn't want to say because what are feelings. also what if he was glad to be rid of her? better to just not say anything.
which is why she's here, saying something. adalia's not very good at hard to get. ❱
— Elros, it's been a week, you haven't bothered to even fiddle with your crystal yet?
❰ HOW!!! adalia messed with it almost as soon as she got it to figure it out! ❱
I mean, for starters, were the differences immediate and quantifiable, or have they been protracted and subtle? What exactly changed, and in what ways? And I suppose in order to answer these questions, you'll have to explain how elves and humans differ in your world, so I'll know the basis for comparison.
❰ does it sound like she's getting ready to do a science project or a research paper? oops. ❱
[ Also, it looked like a palantir, so he figured it couldn't be THAT different and he could wait to play with it later? ]
Hah! You would get along with my brother, I think. Hm, most of them have been pretty subtle. Things you don't notice until you look back and go "oh hey". I stopped being able to hear the song of the world fairly slowly, and I can still hear Ulmo, but it's really hard to speak to the world now. The aging thing I've not noticed yet? But I mean, I'm still pretty young... for an elf. So I dunno how that's going to translate, human wise. I need more sleep - I noticed that pretty soon, and I can't go as long without food, either. Elrond said the elven-light went out in my eyes pretty much the minute I said so, but the twin bond is still strong, so that hasn't changed.
❰ why is she so unreasonably fond of you, your bizarre creature
as elros speaks, adalia begins to write notes in her book, the scratch of her quill on the paper audible over the sending crystal, but that stops rather quickly, as she realizes how little she's going to understand, even when she finishes writing. ❱
I'm going to need definitions for a few of those things, ❰ she says drily, somewhat annoyed at her lack of understanding. ❱ Namely, "song of the world" and "Ulmo". Also elven-light, probably. Your elves are very different from my elves are very different from Thedosian elves.
Hah! I suppose they might be. Alright, well, the elven-light is the easiest thing - you've seen my kinsmen by now, yes? Ever notice that they glow? All elves do, although the Valinoreans are brighter, something something Light of the Trees... ask Maglor to tell you that part, it's really fun when he does it, because he was there to see them and can show you how they looked. It's something about how we Men are tied to our bodies, with the hroa, the physical, being the dominant part of our natures, but for elves, its the other way around, with the fea, the spirit or soul, being the more dominant. Quite literally, you're seeing the edges of their spirits spill out over the constraints of their flesh."
He turns the book so he can see, stealing a kiss to the Peredhel's cheek.
"I am studying the different weapons available in this world. Most of those who requested items from me wished for them to look exotic. Even so, I should know how the local swords and such are meant to look."
"Ah... I think they seek weapons and armor that are exotic and useful." he will not make anything without a purpose, "Our armor is exotic to them, it seems. We do like to fashion our clothing, our armor, our swords and bows like works of art."
"I could do with better armor." Elros shrugs. "We had to make do for the dragon, and I miss the dwarves of Belegost already! No-one else quite makes dragon-proofing quite so well as they did. I didn't have much beyond hunting leathers when they brought me here, but you know I like those better than plate."
"I need to find you good leather." he picks up a quill that rests beside him, dips it in a small pot of ink and makes a notation in a small book filled with blank pages, "I would feel better if you had a little plate - particularly for your head and throat."
"Necessary." he amends, raising a hand to trace over one of Elros's now rounded ears, "It could not hurt. We are strangers here and I have heard of fearsome foes in the wild."
"I want you to come." he nods and closes the book, setting it aside, "We need to stay together. This world makes it far too easy for us to be torn from each other's company."
"Thankfully." he grins and stands from the bench, "I should have some poisons within the next month. They will help us defeat beasts that the Lady Beleth told me about."
"I know that, but she got all upset when I brought it up?"Elros rolls his eyes.
"I tell you, it's like dealing with the Easterlings! Really, I left that all behind deliberately - I would be quite happy to not need to deal with it again. You can play nice with them if you want, but I'm just as happy to leave it again. Men are more fun."
"Maybe it was the manner in which you brought it up?" Maedhros's eyebrows rise and then he chuckles, "I agree it is very tiring to see otherwise skilled people biting and barking at each other. The problems they should be addressing are all around them, yet they focus on feeling superior."
"I asked if she could elaborate to me on their conquering, and nearly had my head bitten off. It does not speak well when one cannot even acknowledge their own people's defeat. You and Maglor taught me better! Call a spade a spade - call a kidnapping a kidnapping. You are my foster father, but you were also my jailor. I knew that, I acknowledged it. That's the only way to work through it, that's what I was taught. To act as if it never happened... tch. And worse, to explode at a stranger, simply because I am human? I don't have time for such histrionics. I chose mortality to get away from the politics of immortals. I have no interest in getting embroiled in it here."
"You are entirely correct and you do not deserve to be embroiled in the politics anymore." he laid a hand on Elros's shoulder, silently encouraging him to breathe and calm himself.
Beleth isn't alone in her reaction. He has met others who are equally emotional about the kindest of advice. Maedhros has decided to take none of it personally and simply do as he sees best.
"They are not immortal." he does not know their exact lifespan, but they are much more like Men than the Elves of Arda, "What you see are the politics of Elves mixed with the politics of Men, I fear. The worst of both worlds."
"Aye, and with enough discrimination to make a Mumak sick. Treating their own people as if they're somehow worse, because they stay in human towns? Pfah. It's just like the War of Wrath again, with loss of life because no one would listen to the Doomed Sons of Feanor, never mind that you and Maglor had the best battle experience of everyone there! Or because no one would fight beside Cousin Celebrimbor and his men because oh no, how terrible, they foreswore their lords, those kinslayers. Bah. Even the Easterlings stop fighting each other if you give them a common enemy to hate!"
"They are not above torturing one another either." his mouth is in a grim line, "Our battle experience will come in handy should they try that ploy on one of us. Then they will know what sort of warriors Arda has bred."
In a way, he longs to vent some of his anger. As gentle as he can be, there is always rage under the surface.
"I think the only quality we should discriminate against is stupidity."
"Maglor will kill anyone who touches you." Elros predicts. "He gets so protective these days. But either way - I don't owe them anything, and that attitude is hardly endearing them to me! I chose Men for a reason, Maedhros. I love you - you and Fingon and Maglor and Galadriel... you're family, both of my blood and of my choosing. I'll always come when you call. But if cousin Thranduil wants to embroil himself in their politics, that's his affair. I want nothing to do with them."
"I won't put him in that position if I can help it." Maedhros knows Elros's words are true, "No, you owe them nothing. I am proud of you for standing your ground, yondo and I am sorry she took that tone with you." he smiles briefly, sharply, "She takes a far different tone with me - out of fear, I am sure."
"I'd just as soon catch the next ship out of here in honesty."
Elros sighs. "I can't blame Father for always putting out to sea if Sindar-Noldor relations were even half this bad. She probably thinks you are wonderful."
Let us hope that things change for the better sooner rather than later.
( It is frustrating in no small way to be completely and utterly inept in the art of healing. Her abilities are limited to keeping pressure on wounds and making soothing cups of tea, patchy memories of flowers and their uses from her childhood. )

"I don't get sick often but when I do it tends to be dramatic. Are you well yourself? I...am restless again. Talk me out of going to sea in an unfinished boat?"
