NAME: Elros
AGE: 90
NATIONALITY: Numenorean

OCCUPATION: King
TITLE/RANK: Tar-Minyatur, First King of Numenor
HEIGHT: 6'5-6"ish
BUILD: lithe rather than stocky, but clearly has muscle on him and is heavier than your average elf
HAIR: Black
EYES: Grey
SKIN: Fair
BEARING: Elros carries himself proudly - chin up, shoulders back. He's full of restless movement, often, tapping of his fingers or toes unless he's concentrating
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: HE LOOKS A LOT LIKE ELROND. LIKE. IDENTICAL. A bit more sun-tanned, a bit more mortal. Shorter hair

Status

exploriiiiiiiiing. Or wrangling his crazy foster dads. Or killing dragons =D

Reputation

He looks very Tolkien elf-like. There are faint but obvious familial traits that hark to Fingon mostly, but also Maglor & Maedhros as well, almost certainly, to Thranduil. He moves and fights and speaks very much like Maglor & Maedhros. He comes across to most people as open and cheerful, he has both charisma and the ability to lead, he's an excellent swordsman and he loves ships. He has a surprisingly comprehensive knowledge of dirty fishermen ditties and a decent voice to sing them in.

Hooks

(1) Take him sailing. PLEASE
(2) Elros wants to kill a dragon. SEVERAL DRAGONS. Look he has a father to catch up with in Mighty Deeds Of Renown.

Elros Tar-Minyatur ruled the Númenóreans for four hundred years and ten. For to the Númenóreans long life had been granted, and they remained unwearied for thrice the span of mortal Men in Middle-earth; but to Eärendil's son the longest life of any Man was given

HMD/Permissions/Contact

HMD: Tell me anything! All comments are screened.

IC Permissions:

Physical Affection: Elros likes to give and get hugs! Also includes back slapping, arm wrestling etc. He does have the elvish sensibility about touching hair being very affectionate/intimate behaviour.
Physical Violence: LET'S SPAR
Romantic Attachments: Single~ Hello ladies~
Mental Manipulation: Ask first, but Elros has only rudimentary defences and can quite likely be read quite easily, being born to a family which does in fact have mental abilities as a standard race thing. He can't read you back though. Unless you're Elrond.

OOC Permissions:

Fourth Walling: Elros is already likely a fixture in songs and lays in-world. I would rather no one says he's fictional, but feel free to tell him you've heard about him
Triggers: OOCly I am good with most things I think? I'll say stop if I get twitchy. Smut is case-by-case but I tend to avoid it.
Other things: feel feel to threadjack and backtag

Elros here - I'm busy, but leave a message and I'll get back to you. If I don't, the dragon probably ate me or my ship sank. Oops. Please don't tell Elrond.

Character

Name: Elros Eärendilion, Tar-Minyatur, first king of Númenor (although if he wants to piss certain relatives off he might sometimes go by Elerossë Makalaurion, which is both in Quenya, AND claims Maglor as his foster father, thus upsetting at least 90% of his relatives on one side in one way or another, and probably about 50% of the other side)
Canon: Tolkien's Silmarillion
Canon Point: Shortly after he establishes Númenor, so around year 32 or 33 of the Second Age of Arda
Journal: [personal profile] tar_minyatur
Age: around 90 years old (although he looks to be in his 30s)

Canon World

In the beginning, there was a Song, and the Song was made real, and the world was born of it. It is a world very like ours (it might have been ours, maybe, "once upon a time" as the saying goes) - but young, still. Where Good is mostly good and Evil is very definitely Evil, where the Gods are real (and you can speak to them, even on quite friendly terms) and Angels/Demigods might fall in love with Elven Kings and marry them and bear children, and Elves and Dwarves and Men all coexist (but not hobbits - not yet). It is a world that has been at war, for most of it's existence. Good was losing, until very recently. The win cost them most of a continent.

If you transposed it onto a map of our world, it would match quite nicely with Europe, and that is a fair assessment of the environs - the weather and populace is mostly European-leaning, with the climate shading from Polar in the north-west right down to Mediterranean in the south-east. The peoples who live there are mostly at about Middle-ages levels of development, with the elves (particularly the High Elves) and possibly the dwarves shading a touch higher.

Since the end of the First Age and the War of Wrath, the landmasses have changed - to the West you can still find Aman, the land of the Valar and the home of the High Elves (and the closest thing to earthly paradise). A good chunk of the Eastern Continent has recently been sunk under water - the ocean is a good deal wider than in was before, the ice bridge that used to connect the two melted, and a whole bunch of new islands have popped up. It isn't quite the Middle-earth of the Hobbit, yet, but it's getting there.

History

wiki-link here

Elros and Elrond are born in 532 of the First Age of the Sun. It is a tumultuous time, with the strength of the Elven armies that so long held back Morgoth broken, and the alliances between the Free Peoples broken. They are born to royalty - the Queen of Doriath-in-exile, Elwing, whose grandmother was Luthien, the half-maia (that's an angel/demigod) who stole a Silmaril from Morgoth (Ultimate Evil)'s crown. And Earendil, the High-king of the Noldor-in-exile. Both of them are peredhel - half-elven, as well as refugees, escaped from destroyed kingdoms - in Earendil's case, by Morgoth, in Elwing's... by other elves. Specifically, by the sons of Feanor, who came seeking the Silmaril that she has now inherited. Evil is pressing close, but it is held mostly at bay (interestingly, by the Feanorions, as much as anyone else). Earendil goes out to sea often, searching for his parents, who vanished westwards, but also for any way to bring help.

The twins are only six years old when it happens. The Feanorions send letters demanding the Silmaril. Elwing refuses to give it to them - doesn't she deserve it, after the way they killed her family? Earendil is away at sea when they arrive with fire and blades. Desperate and fearing her children are are already dead, Elwing takes the jewel and jumps into the sea. She thinks to die, only... The Lord of the Seas saves her - transforms her into a bird with the jewel around her neck, and she flies West, looking for her husband. She doesn't realise until too late that her boys are still alive.

Maglor and Maedhros find them instead. They could leave them - help is almost certainly on its way. But. They have left the town in flames, and without defense. The Enemy might show up first. They take the boys - as hostages, first. But... "And love grew between them, as little might be thought". Elros and Elrond are brought up as Noldorin princelings, educated to the highest standard, taught to be deadly in war or peace, and eventually, sent to Gil-galad. Elros is put in charge of the humans, Elrond, assigned to Gil-galad's staff.

Elros finds he loves the mortals, their way of not dwelling on the past. He leads them in battle and learns how they die, but also he sees how they live - and it inspires him. Above them, their father flies a star into the heart of a dragon and slays it, but never comes near enough to speak to them.

At the end of the war, they are told to chose their fates. Elros picks mortality. He who was their commander they make their king, and the Valar grant them a island. He names it Elenna - "Starwards" - but everyone will call it by the nation that he will establish on it - Numenor. He takes a new name - Tar-Minyatur - and then he starts a new chapter of his life.

Personality

Like many in the Silmarillion, Elros has very little to actually say - so his personality is drawn from what he does, instead.

He is Elrond's twin, his other half, as twins in Tolkien often are - they are a match, in many ways, complements to each other. We know that he is both a war-leader and, as Aragorn's foreparent, a healer (the hands of the King are the hands of a healer, after all), although it is Elrond to whom the healing gifts will come strongest.

Elros had a troubled childhood, but, somehow, a happy one. We know he watched his childhood burn down around him, and yet, he loved his foster parents, who were also his kidnappers - he is able, thus, to forgive, even those things heinous. That childhood marked him in good ways, and bad - he knows that people are not easily defined, that one may be both kin-slayer and also kin-saviour, and that good and evil may coincide. It makes him open-hearted and generous, but also cautious. He knows that people will let him down, but also he is willing to give them second chances - because sometimes, they redeem themselves.

He was young, when he fought in the War of Wrath - at the most, he would have been in his thirties, and yet his Men loved him enough to make him king, after - and keep him there! He ruled almost 500 years, unopposed. So we know he commands loyalty - he knows how to listen and to lead both.

He is an explorer, and adventurer - he chose the swiftness of mortality, and the lure of the unknown, rather than the steadfastness of the elves. He is more mercurial than the more placid elves, swifter with his passions - both love and hate - but less likely to hold grudges.

He is confident in himself - tried and tested in war - enough to chose to take an unknown road,  even though it meant parting from his only family. He lives in the now, looking forwards, unlike the backward looking elves.

Having said that, considering Elrond has a sense of humor, I think we can safely say Elros does too!

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:
* a rather deadly warrior - he was trained by the best, and lead an army from relatively young, in elf-years
* a healer of some skill - "the hands of the king are the hands of a healer"
* a commander with both military and political know-how - again, taught by both experience and some of the best in the business
* a sailor - thanks for the sea-longing, dad
* also, he's mortal now, but he remains still peredhel. He has some abilities that carry over from the time he was still mostly an elf - mainly, he lives longer and ages slower (he lives to 500, and by all accounts is in full possession of all his facilities right up to til the end), he heals a little faster and is more resistant to illness (he can and does get sick, it's just a little less common, and he'll get better faster, as a general rule, and it takes more than normal to put him down for the count)

Weakness:
* he's mortal now, but he's only BEEN mortal for maybe 30 years or so of his 90 years of life. He's still adjusting to things like not being able to see as far, or hear as well, or last as long without food or drink, or call the wind and speak to the waves the way he used to - it might make him a bit snappish, and/or clumsy intermittently when he tries and fails
* one of the reasons he chose mortality was because he doesn't like dwelling in the past - he's liable to push forwards, and although he can weigh risks if he has to, he doesn't much worry about yesterday, he's more concerned about NOW - it makes him more impulsive than his brother
* it also makes him hotter-tempered - he is swifter to fury than Elrond, but quicker to forgive, too

Suggested Nerfs

Mainly, I am guessing the healing will need to be nerfed - although he has no kingsfoil anyway so he's not going to be able to pull an Aragorn-calling-back-from-the-doors-of-death thing. I am guessing if we dial it back to... battlefield first aid and... maybe being able to make someone feel marginally less like keeling over if he tries? Or we can remove it entirely too.

Arrival Inventory

Elros will arrive in simple light hunting armor - tough leather that has been embossed in elaborate patterns, weatherproof cloak, an undertunic and overtunic in fine cotton, worked in his house colors and heraldry - both the personal one that he carried over from the House of Hador, but also the Numenorean High King's emblem, and an eight-rayed silver star on his cloak pin. He's also wearing the winged crown, and he'll be armed - an elven-made greatsword and a hunting bow and arrows.

'Human'ization

Elros will look very like a human, as he is one! His ears, if you squint, MIGHT be slightly a bit pointier than normal. He's tall, too, at least 6'5-6. He's built slender rather than bulky, but he's heavier-set than the lithe fullblooded elves, and will likely grow somewhat stockier in age. Like his twin Elrond, he is dark-haired and grey-eyed, and he looks at least 60 years younger than he actually is.

Fit

Elros is an explorer, at heart - there's a reason Númenor was full of ship-kings, apart from them being an Island Nation! He sees the world and he wants to go out and to do and to be - it was why he chose mortality, rather than elvenkind, as his twin brother Elrond did. He will doubtless be itching to get out and explore. The sea is in his blood, as it was in his father's, and grandfather's, and will be in his descendants, as well. He's also got a very strong sense of right and wrong, coming from the sort of background he does. He will want, instinctively, to get out and help those less fortunate than himself, and be furious with anyone in authority who doesn't, or who abuses that power. It might be enough to get him into politics, once the itch to see new lands settles somewhat - he is a king, after all, even if only newly minted.
